Structures built with stone by a highly skilled mason can last for centuries, far longer than any wood structure with far less maintenance required.  The initial cost of a stone or brick building may be more than its equivalent made in wood, but the cost of maintaining a stone building over its life as opposed to a wooden structure is anything but equivalent.  Wood rots.  Wood burns.  Wood splits under the strain of high winds.  Wood is vulnerable to termites, carpenter bees, and other such insects.

Ask yourself this: Are there many wooden structures as old as the Egyptian temples that have survived alongside these Wonders of the World?
